Thunder Radar - Rain Radar Combined with Lightning Data

The thunder radar is a unique combination of weather radar images with lightning data for Switzerland and neighboring countries. The displayed information is live with detailled zoom and 3D functions. The thunder radar ist the first combination of radar and lightning data where the user can distinguish between colud and grund lighning, view the vertical profiles of radar measurement and lightning discharges. The pictures will be updated every 5 minutes with a delay ao only a few minutes. The thunder radar is a powerful tool in assessing current and short-term forecasts of impending severe weather such as thunderstorms, hail storms and extreme rainfall in summer, snowfall, heavy rain and icing conditions in winter, respectively.

The basic service is free for anyone to use. The subscription for the extended services is available for a small fee.

Basic service thunder radar (free of charge)

The thunder radar features an overview radar loop (precipitation and lightning discharges) during the last half hour of Switzerland and neighboring foreign countries. This loop is free and accessible for everybody. The coloring of the radar echoes distinguishes between rain and snow. Two versions of the radar image are available: A version for viewing on a computer and a scaled down version designed for mobile phones. Free radar image for PC | Radar image for mobile phones

You can subscribe for the two services 'thunder radar zoom' and 'radar 3D' either individually or together.

Thunder radar zoom

The thunder Radar Zoom provides an enlarged image with detailed zoom. The relief map and display of the main towns simplify finding the exact precipitation. In another graph, the regionally averaged vertical profile of temperature and humidity will be displayed. The snow line can be seen in this chart, in addition to the special coloring on the radar screen. There also exists a version for the PC and one for the mobile phone. The mobile version displays no relief in favor of a shorter loading time. The thunder radar zoom can be tested free of charge for 14 days after registering. Radar 3D

The radar 3D provides a pseudo-3D illustration of the rainfall combined with lightning data, with indication of the height profiles (0-12 km) through the rain clouds. An archive of the current and past day of the radar images is also available.

Lightning activity during the last 24 hours is shown in a sequence diagram and on hourly maps.

Archive plus

The Archive Plus completes our services with an archive of radar images of the current month and previous month.

Customers of the radar 3D subscriptions receive access to the archive of the 3D images of the current and previous month instead of just the last two days.

Customers of the thunder radar zoom benefit from an archive of the thunder radar overview and zoom images.

A valid subscription of a thunder radar product (zoom, 3D or combination) is required to purchase the additional option "Archive Plus."
